Hornworms

Hornworms (Manduca quinquemaculata) are a premium feeder insect for reptiles, known for their bright green color, soft texture, and high water content. They are packed with hydration and moderate protein, making them a great choice for:

• Bearded dragons

• Chameleons

• Geckos

• Monitors and other insectivorous reptiles

Hornworms are especially beneficial for rehydrating reptiles, and their vibrant movement often triggers a strong feeding response, even from picky eaters.

Care Instructions

• Diet: Hornworms feed exclusively on a specialized commercial chow made from a blend of plant-based nutrients.

• Housing: Keep hornworms in their vented plastic cup with the food placed at the top. Store the plastic cup upside down, so waste drops away from the food and worms crawl upward to eat.

• Temperature:

  • Grow quickly: Store at 80-85F to promote fast growth

  • Slow growth: Store at 55-65F (like in a wine cooler) to extend their lifespan if not feeding immediately

• Cleanliness: Keep the container dry; discard any dead worms or moldy food immediately.

• Lifespan: With proper temperature control, hornworms can live up to 2-3 weeks. 

Feeding to Reptiles

• Highly Visible: Their bright green color and wiggling motion stimulate feeding responses in most reptiles.

• Hydration Boost: Hornworms are roughly 85% moisture, ideal for reptiles that need hydration or won’t drink from bowls.

• Soft-bodied: Their squishy bodies are easy to digest, so they are safe for young, sick, or recovering reptiles.

Note: Because hornworms are high in moisture and low in fat, they are best used as part of a varied diet, not a sole food source.
